International English for Oral Communication

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge:

This is a multi-level class for students from Year 9 to Year 13 who are using spoken English as a Second Language at a Foundation/Level 1 ELLP (CEFR A1, A2). The course is 4 hours a week.

Students will focus on developing both their speaking and listening skills. Developing conversational fluency is a key component of this class. Students will participate in communication activities such as exchanging information, role plays and giving prepared presentations to the class on a wide range of everyday topics. Students will work collaboratively in all IEOC classes.

Senior students can gain up to 20 internally assessed unit standard credits for Level 1 English Language (EL). Other assessments include regular assessment of their speaking and listening skills and mid-year and end of year exams. Students will have access to digital devices and digital tools to help them improve their communication skills.

Required Prior Learning

If testing and discussions show that students are at a Foundation/Level 1 ELLP (CEFR A1, A2)  and they need more conversational fluency (speaking and listening skills in English) to be able to achieve confidently at college in NCEA or in general, students will be placed in this class. Students need to speak to the ESOL staff before they are placed in IEOC.
