IEOC

International English for Oral Communication

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms J. Cox

This is a multi-level class for students from Year 9 to Year 13 who are using spoken English as a second language at a basic/elementary level (CEFR A1, A2). It is 4 hours a week.

Students will focus on developing both their speaking and listening skills. Developing conversational fluency is a key component of this class. Students will participate in communication activities such as exchanging information, role plays and giving prepared presentations to the class on a wide range of everyday topics. Students will work collaboratively in all IEOC classes.

Students can gain up to 20 internally assessed unit standard credits for L1 English Language (EL). Other assessments include regular assessment of their speaking and listening skills and mid-year and end of year exams. Students will have access to digital devices and digital tools to help them improve their communication skills.

Required Prior Learning

If testing and interviews show that students need more conversational fluency to be able to achieve at college in NCEA or generally, students will be placed in this class.
