International English for Academic Purposes

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms J. Cox

This is a multi-level class for students from Year 9 to Year 13 who are using English as a second language.  It is 4 hours per week.

Students will work on all four modes of English language, reading, writing, speaking and listening.  They will gain confidence to write a wide range of genres with increasing fluency and cohesion, including the use of academic language.  Students will also write and present speeches and they will be required to write responses to both independently read texts and in-class films.

Students will have the opportunity to gain up to 25 internally assessed unit standard credits for L2 English Language (EL). Other assessment opportunities include weekly vocabulary tests, mid-year and end of year exams. Students will have access to digital devices and tools such as Education Perfect and Reading Plus to improve their grammar and literacy skills. 



Required Prior Learning


If testing and interviews show that students are at an intermediate level in English Language and they need more academic reading and writing skills to be able to achieve at college in NCEA or generally, they will be placed in this class.
