International English for Academic Purposes

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge:

This is a multi-level class for students from Year 9 to Year 13 who are using English as a Second Language at an CEFR low- high A2 level (ELLP Level 2).  The course is 4 hours per week.

Students will work on all four modes of English language, reading, writing, speaking and listening.  They will gain confidence to write a wide range of genres with increasing fluency and cohesion, including the use of academic language. Students will also write and present speeches and they will be required to write responses to both independently read texts and in-class films.

Senior students may have the opportunity to gain up to 25 internally assessed unit standard credits for Level 2 English Language (EL). Other assessment opportunities include weekly vocabulary tests, mid-year and end of year exams. Students will have access to digital devices and tools such as Education Perfect and Reading Plus to improve their reading, grammar and literacy skills.


Required Prior Learning


If testing and discussions show that a student is at an CEFR low- high A2 level (ELLP Level 2) level in English Language and they need improved academic reading and writing skills to be able to achieve at college in NCEA or in general, they will be placed in this class.  

Students will need to talk to the ESOL staff before they can be placed in this class.
