Subject Description

Required Prior Learning

Entry to this course is dependent on your teacher at Year 10 and the HOD of Physical Educations' approval.  Students who are involved in this subject must have been actively and positively involved in the activities of the Year 10 Health and Physical Education programme.



This course has a strong emphasis on learning through practical participation. It promotes the achievement of individual success and teamwork. Students will develop skills & attitudes that contribute to establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle (Hauora). This course provides students with the opportunities to gain 15 credits at level 1 NCEA across three Achievement Standards. It also provides a pathway for students looking to continue in the field of Sport and Physical Education.

The physical activities covered in this course include - Surfing, Rock-climbing, Kayaking, Orienteering, Volleyball, Badminton, Football, Touch Rugby, Ki-O-Rahi & Ultimate Frisbee. 

The three main units covered in the course are.

  • Unit 1: Movement and its influence on Hauora - (Written assessment)
  • Unit 2: Unity in movement and strategies that develop Kotahitanga -  (Written assessment)
  • Unit 3: Strategies in Movement - Demonstrate movement strategies in an applied setting -  (Practical assessment)

There is an "optional" camp for this subject in Week 6 of Term 1. Please note that places on this camp are very limited and not all students will be able to attend. This cost of this camp is subject to change but is estimated to be $90 - $110.
