Course Description

Themes included in this course are Tāonga Pūoro (Māori instruments), Te Whare Pura (weaving harakeke), Manaki Marae (catering on the marae), Mau rākau (Māori martial art), Kai Māori (gathering and preparation for consumption), Pūrākau (story telling and history), and thoughout, Tīkanga and kawa (traditions, beliefs, and rituals).

This is a half year Unit Standard course focused on learning about aspects of the Māori world other than learning specifically about te reo Maori, tīkanga, or Māori performing arts.


Course Overview

Term 1
Kō tātou tēnei- This is us. Re-capping and learning school haka, waiata, karakia and haka pōwhiri, as well as tīkanga here at school and variations throughout the motu or country.

Ko au tēnei, kei kōnei au- This is me, I and here. Growing the concept of identity within a Māori framework to foster mana; and grow knowledge of local surroundings and the connections that remain between the people and the place.

Term 2
Manākitanga, manāki tangata, manāki marae. Hospitality, caring for others, and upholding marae. Learning in practice, students grow their understanding of each sense as they explore the dimensions of Matariki and its connection to the hauora of others and ourselves.

Taonga Pūoro- Māori music. Introducing the voices of our atua Māori or Māori deities through understanding the lore of Māori instruments and how they tell these stories.

Term 3

L1 Te Ao Māori, L1 Te Reo Māori, L1 Te Reo Rangatira

Te Ao Māori allows learners exposure to cultural knowledge affordable to any pathway.

Required Prior Learning

No prior learning is required however we invite learners to bring with them their own cultural capital and prior learning from within Whanau, Hapū and Iwi contexts.
