L2 Art Design & Illustration
Subject Description

This course is a digitally based Art course where students learn and apply Design techniques using Adobe. Students undertake learning in the fields of Graphic Design and Digital Illustration. They select a themed idea/emotion which is portrayed through the launch of a book and design characters, cover designs, advertising materials; posters, social media and page layouts for their choice of book; Graphic novel, comic book, children's book.
Students will learn how to develop and progress their ideas, how to convey a message, express a point of view, approach challenges with a new perspective, and develop innovative responses that improve, or challenge our experience of the world through Design application.
Students’ work is initially a directed, approach using recommended model artists, ultimately leading to an exploration of their own. Students will find it an advantage to have access to Photoshop and must have portable backup hard drives or similar device, as this subject cannot be completed without.
Internal Standards: One internal standard is offered and is worth 4 credits and is a combination of research theory and practical work.
External Portfolio: This is a submission of practical work worth 12 credits in total and is externally assessed. Essentially, this folio is based on the work established in the Internals that are completed during the first two terms of the year. The folio comprises of two A1 panels that show how students have used their chosen designer models and integrated them into their own work. The work must show a development and a sequence of logical ideas that are investigated, developed and refined to produce finished conclusions.
Entry at HOD discretion if Art has not been taken at Level 1.
Required Prior Learning
It is advisable/or at HOD discretion that students who wish to enter L2 Art Design & Illustration must have either completed L1 Art Visual, L1 Creative Media Art, Design & Visual Communication (Graphics), Digital Media or Fashion & Design. The students must have gained an ‘Achieved’ or better grade in all internal and external assessments in any of the above mentioned subjects. If these criteria are met, then students can advance to L2 Art Design & Illustration.
Subject Costs
Students will require a USB Flash drive, minimum of 16GB to backup their work.They also require the following stationery items which can be bought individually or as a pack from our recommended supplier on the school website.
A4 workbook, gluestick, fine liner drawing pen.
Specialist printing is available for purchase through the department.
