L1 Science
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr S. Sheppard.
Our L1 Science course takes aspects of Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Physics, and Biology, merging them together to develop Science skills and capabilities. Our programme aligns with the NCEA Level 1 changes and uses knowledge drawn from both mātauranga Māori and western Science and their respective knowledge-generating processes to help deepen students’ skills, attitudes, and values to build a foundation for understanding our world. Students will learn about waterways, genetics, chemical reactions, forces and motion, astronomical cycles and biodiversity in Aotearoa. We will explore how Science can shape our future and how to apply Science as a socially valuable knowledge system. Students will develop their critical thinking, science capabilities and experience how scientists carry out investigations. Through our Nature of Science course we will examine how Science ideas are communicated, and make links between scientific knowledge and everyday decisions and actions.
