Year 10 Sport Performance (Half Year)

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr S. Loudon.

Many young people today are extremely engaged in their sporting activities. Some may choose to pursue a career in sport, whilst others purely participate for enjoyment. This course will cater to those who are striving to achieve in their chosen sport, enjoy learning through doing and want to excel in a setting with other motivated students. 

Get FIT for your Sport  (Functional fitness training) 

  • Students will learn about the basics of the principles of training, correct stretching, sport specific warm up and the safe use of exercise equipment. Students will research and design a training programme for their individual sport, then carry out training sessions both in and out of school. This unit will run across both terms, with the students carrying out regular training, testing and reflection

Get your MIND ready to compete  (Sports Psychology) 

  • Students learn about sport psychology concepts such as positive mindset, resilience, goal setting and mental toughness. Students will set goals for their fitness, coaching and performance programmes and track their progress towards these goals

SKILLS for life (Managing self

  • Students will gain knowledge and understanding in a number of different areas to allow them to be successful both in their chosen sport and in other aspects of life. These topics include rest & recovery, time management, nutrition and injury management

GIVE BACK to the game  (Coaching, leadership and community) 

  • Students learn about the skills and characteristics required for effective coaching and officiating, so that they can further develop their leadership and interpersonal abilities and give back to the game. Practical sessions involve running  small coaching sessions with your peers in the sport of your choice

Required Prior Learning

  • The course will be open to students who are currently engaged in sport/s that are recognised by the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council. This could be for Otumoetai College e.g. rugby, netball, soccer, underwater hockey etc or outside school such as Skiing, cycling or multi- sport etc. Any queries regarding suitability to be directed to the TIC of the programme: Mr Loudon or HOD Health & PE: Mr Davis 
  • Students involved in the programme would be expected to have a positive attitude towards physical activity and their peers, be well prepared in terms of bringing the correct gear and be committed to excelling in their chosen sport/s
  • The course is designed to support the information the students are receiving from their coaches while also providing an environment where they can interact and learn with like-minded athletes
